Exeter Chiefs open new X-ray room with a jungle-style makeover

Stars from the Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club officially opened a newly refurbished paediatric X-ray room at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital recently.

The room has been given a jungle-style makeover so it is more friendly and welcoming for children thanks to a fundraising campaign led by Radiology staff and the support of digital imaging company Agfa HealthCare.

It is the second room to receive a makeover as a result of the RD&E’s Big Raise for Little Rays campaign.

Thousands of people in Devon have signed up to take part in high-quality research, accelerating meaningful benefits to patient health.

At our Woman of the Year ball Penni Ball who runs groups in Pinhoe and Countess Wear, alongside fellow colleagues was congratulated on helping slimmers to lose weight and change their lives by singer and TV presenter Peter Andre.

The team, who run Slimming World groups in Devon, was delighted to get a chance to cuddle up to Peter when he presented the annual Slimming World Awards. The Mysterious Girl singer co-hosted the event with the organisation’s founder and chair Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE.

A community-minded sports officer at the University of Exeter has won an award for setting up a free fitness session in a city park.

Paul Mouland, who works in the Sports department at the University, won a DevonLive Community Honours award after setting up Freemoovement in Barton Fields Park, St Thomas in May in his own time. Five schools in the South West last week hosted an award-winning educational bus from betty for schools, designed to teach young women about periods in a more open and engaging way.

Pupils at North Petherwin Primary School, The Maynard School and St James’ School Exeter experienced the interactive activities on board the ‘betty bus’ as part of its tour of the UK.

Climate change is already a significant public health issue and a looming global health emergency, new research shows.

The findings, outlined in The Lancet medical journal, demonstrate the various ways climate change is already affecting the health of people across the planet.

Leading doctors, academics and policy professionals from 24 organisations – including the University of Exeter – worked on the report.

People whose lives have been affected by dementia have worked with well-known professional artists to create insightful images and poems that capture some of their experiences, to form a new book.

The project involved people with dementia and their partners who are part of Age UK Exeter’s Budding Friends project and who spend time together on the charity’s allotment or at a local art studio. Quality inspectors rate Devon care homes and GP practices higher than the national average

Nearly a quarter of Devon GP practices are outstanding according to quality inspectors, compared to just 4 percent of practices in England. And the percentage of Devon’s care homes rated outstanding is twice the national average.

The data, published by the health and care watchdog, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), is being loudly applauded by Devon County Council and NEW Devon CCG.

19 of 435 care homes in Devon (4 percent), inspected by the CQC, are considered ‘outstanding’ homes, compared to just 2 percent of care homes in England overall.
