Donkey century for Dorothy!

A donkey-mad grandmother has knitted her 100th toy donkey in aid of The Donkey Sanctuary. Dorothy Harrison, from Beacon Heath, Exeter, started knitting the toys after picking up a knitting pattern on a visit to The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth in 2011 and enjoyed knitting the donkeys so much she set herself the challenge of knitting 100. She says: “I’m quite chuffed really to have done something for something worthwhile. I did the first one and after that I thought, I could do 100 easily.

“I’ve seen some others that other people have made but my granddaughter says that mine are the...

Yarn-bomb bursts apple tree back to life!

A 12 foot community yarn-bomb has exploded in the orchard at Killerton National Trust estate near Exeter.

The culprits are an army of 50 knitters and pom-pom bombers from across Devon and as far flung as Oregon in the United States.

Their combined efforts have burst Killerton’s retired apple tree back to life by entirely covering it in 400 individually knitted leaves, 50 apple-pompoms and hand-knitted woolly wildlife including game birds, squirrels, hedgehogs, frogs and a swarm of Killerton bees.

The yarn-bomb will be on proud display throughout the Killerton Cider...

The Great Exeter Tea Cosy Competition comes to Exeter

There is something exciting going on at The Hub on the Green and word is spreading. There is talk of tea cosies in school playgrounds, street corners and all over Twitter.

Liz Croft, who volunteers her time to run the knitting group at the hub, had a lovely idea to start a tea cosy competition and Joey Lee who runs The Hub on the Green challenged her to take it outside of the hub and make it something rather special. And she has.

So The Great Exeter Tea Cosy Competition now has a silver teapot trophy, an amazing array of prizes, an impressive judging panel and the goodwill...

Knitting is the new yoga

Meditate on the word meditation and it is likely that certain images will come to mind. A Buddhist monk perhaps in saffron robes, or a lycra-clad young woman folded into the lotus position.

In the last couple of decades, meditation has risen from the realm of Eastern spiritual practice to emerge as a stress-busting antidote to modern life. Science has corroborated what Zen masters have known for years; that regular meditation helps people cope with stress, illness and chronic pain as well as promoting wellbeing and a host of other benefits.
