New speech and language courses to help young children catch up after COVID-19

Research conducted in schools last year revealed that the coronavirus pandemic, with its lockdowns and restrictions, held back many young children's speech and language development.

So, Devon County Council has created new courses which are available to parents and carers, and staff who work with children and young people, to help children catch up and reach their potential.

Adult learners are among those celebrating well-earned GCSE results, having completed their maths and English qualifications with Learn Devon, Devon County Council's adult learning service. Since March, Learn Devon has changed the way it delivers adult learning courses to ensure that learners continue with their learning safely. Their results mark the end of the intensive ten month GCSE courses. Two vets from Indonesia are the first to benefit from a unique new scholarship programme run by a Cornish vet charity. OVAID – Orang utan Veterinary Aid – is run by Nigel and Sara Hicks, based in Launceston. They help hard-pressed orang utan rescue centres and sanctuaries with veterinary support and donations of equipment.

The new OVAID Bronwyn Scholarship meant that two South East Asian vets were able to make the 12,000 kilometre (7,500 mile) journey to the UK to exchange techniques and information on the care and welfare of orang utans.

East Devon District Council’s Countryside team is running a number of events over the summer which gives people the chance to learn more about some of the birds you can see locally.

Hospiscare’s latest shop opened in Heavitree in March and is already doing a roaring trade in a range of electrical goods, homeware, clothes, and second-hand books.

Maths learning takes off at Exeter Airport

Year 5 pupils from Exeter Junior School visited Exeter Airport to investigate maths in the world around them and develop their skills of independent questioning and reflection.
