Devon campaigners ask Government for financial support for terminally ill

Campaigners gathered in Crediton yesterday with one simple message, “nobody should die in poverty”.

The group were collecting signatures for a petition from the UK’s leading end of life charity, Marie Curie.

It calls on the UK Government to give people with a terminal illness their State Pension, no matter their age.

Marie Curie says that a 90,000 people die in poverty every year. Most at risk are people of working age, who are almost twice as likely to fall into poverty at the end of their lives than those of pension age.

The end-of-life charity Marie Curie is calling on people across the South West to throw a Blooming Great Tea Party in June and July to help fund vital care and support for those living with a terminal illness, and their families.

The charity’s fundraising appeal is a piece of cake – simply set a date to host a tea party and invite family, friends, or colleagues to tuck into a delectable treat and catch-up over a cuppa.

Every penny raised from a Blooming Great Tea Party will go towards ensuring more people have access to the care and support they need at the end of life...

A new service launched this week will offer bereaved families in Exeter and Mid Devon additional support from Marie Curie, the UK’s leading end of life charity, when a loved one dies at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RD&E).

Families of patients who die either at the RD&E or who have had support and care in the community from the RD&E will receive a phone call from a specially trained, locally recruited, Marie Curie Companion who will offer a series of weekly telephone bereavement support calls.

Terminal illness charity Marie Curie urgently needs volunteers in Exeter on Thursday (19th). The charity is asking locals to volunteer just two hours of their time for a local supermarket collection.

The shop on South Street is the first the charity has opened in Exeter and will raise vital funds to help Marie Curie Nurses care for people living with a terminal illness. PEOPLE in the South West are being urged to sign up to Swimathon, the world’s biggest annual fundraising swim, to raise money for two great causes, Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie. Swimmers of all ages and abilities are being invited to take part in the annual sponsored event in pools across the region and help raise money for both charities.
