South West house sales hit six year high

The number of house sales in the South West has reached its highest point since 2007 according to a survey by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

The survey showed that sales in December were more than double that f the lowest point of the downturn.

Prices are also rising with a net balance of 56 percent more chartered surveyors reported growing prices in the South West.

Significantly, every area of the UK saw prices increase with London and the South East experiencing the biggest jumps.

Christmas Market in full swing

Exeter’s Christmas market is in full swing today with dozens of bespoke stalls trading on the Cathedral Green.

A mix of local traders and specialist stalls from overseas are trading in the alpine style market.

Local trader Mary Tempest, 63, won the Market’s Pitch-Perfect award designed to promote start-up businesses.

Mary, a local artist, is selling a range of her illustrations of local landmarks and historical sites, with designed key rings and mugs also on sale.

Lights switch-on and Christmas Market

Princesshay was packed with people on Thursday night for the big Christmas lights switch on.

Musical Performances by the University of Exeter’s Jazz Orchestra, the South West Music Academy and the Lympstone Military Wives choir counted down to the main event.

Rob Baxter head coach of the Exeter Chiefs and Paul Tisdale, manager of Exeter City Football Club were joined on stage by Exeter City players John O’Flynn and Sam Parkin and the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Rachel Lyons, to officially turn on the lights.

OFT launches market study into providers of quick, discounted house sales

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is today (18 April) launching a study into the 'quick house sale' market and is calling for people who have used, or considered using, these businesses to contact the OFT about their experiences.

Quick house sale providers offer to buy a house or find a third party buyer very quickly, usually at a discount from the full market value. While providers may offer a valuable service, the OFT is concerned that some practices might lead to homeowners receiving much less for their property than it is worth.
