Senior policeman renews mental health fears

A senior policeman has once again taken to social media to raise concern about the amount of police time being taken up coping with mental health patients.

Devon and Cornwall Assistant Chief Constable Paul Netherton posted on his twitter account: "Yet again MH patients being kept in police cells as no beds available in D&C. NHS providing nurses to help but still no places #unacceptable"

Earlier this year Mr Netherton told Sky News his officers spend 20 per cent of their time dealing with mental health issues even though they are not trained or equipped to do so....

Number of mentally ill people in police custody falls

Police in Devon and Cornwall have welcomed a new report from the National Police Chief’s Council showing a nationwide reduction in the use of police custody cells as a place of safety for those suffering mental illness.

Historically, police cells have been used to house those people detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983. The Government announced earlier this year that it would seek legislation to prohibit the use of police cells as a place of safety for under-18s and reduce the 72 maximum detention period for adults.

Exeter resident Thomas James is hoping to raise £1,750 for mental health charity Mind by taking part in this years iconic London Marathon.

Over 40 per cent of parents in the South West worry about their children’s mental health, more than any other health issue, Action for Children reveals today.

The University of Exeter is joining a growing number of companies committing to end the stigma and discrimination against people with experience of mental health problems by signing a pledge with Time to Change, a programme run by the charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness. Warning notice at Wonford House Hospital

A warning notice has been issued to Devon Partnership NHS Trust after failing to complete improvements to quality of care at Coombehaven ward at Wonford House Hospital.

The warning notice was issued after inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) found that patients on the ward were still not consistently involved in the preparation of their care plans or had regular access to their named nurses despite these concerns being raised by a previous inspection.

The Transitions Project is recruiting volunteers to act as mentors to people who are making changes in their lives, to improve their wellbeing and independence. Our clients may have been homeless, experienced mental health problems or addictions, or other difficult life experiences. Mentoring support can help clients manage change, set goals, improve their confidence and skills. Training and support is provided, the course consists of six Friday mornings starting 31 Jan.
