Pond ‘rescue’ at Holyford Woods

Over the winter months the East Devon District Council’s Countryside team has been working hard to complete the first phase of work to restore the large pond found at the centre of Holyford Woods Local Nature Reserve.

The water body was formerly a small reservoir that was serviced and maintained by the water company, but over the last few decades it has been left to nature and developed into an important habitat for the wildlife in the woods.

Devon Wildlife Trust has announced that one of its most popular and beautiful nature reserves is about to grow.

An extra three hectares of land have been bought by the charity to add to its existing 33 hectare nature reserve of Andrew’s Wood, near Loddiswell, in South Devon. The purchase was made possible after the Devon Wildlife Trust secured generous support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and donations from DWT supporters.

Rescued ducklings restored to nature reserve

Two young Shelduck were recently released back into the wild at Axe Estuary Wetlands after being nursed back to health at the RSPCA Wildlife Centre at West Hatch in Somerset.

Jo Schmidt, RSPCA wildlife assistant, said: “The ducklings were brought to us in September, as they had lost their mother and had problems with their feet and feathers. We kept them outside and monitored them until we were satisfied their essential feathers were waterproof again, and that their feet had healed.”

National firm supports Exeter nature reserve

An award winning national property company has added its support to one of Exeter’s most precious havens for wildlife.

The company, Renaissance Villages, has generously donated £1,500 to leading local conservation charity Devon Wildlife Trust to help with the vital upkeep of its Old Sludge Beds nature reserve. The reserve occupies wildlife rich reed beds, woodland and ponds on the banks of the River Exe close to the city’s Countess Weir Swing Bridge.

Devon County Council is delighted to announce that one of it's most popular visitor destinations, Stover Country Park, is a finalist in this years Devon Tourism Awards.

The park and nature reserve is up for either a bronze, silver or gold in the Access & Inclusivity Award category.

Nature lovers can join East Devon District Council's Countryside Rangers in Seaton on Friday 18 July between 8.30 and 10.30pm to listen for the evening sounds of the inhabitants of the nature reserve.

Those who attend will learn how to use their senses from twilight to darkness, and may even be treated to a sighting of the reserve's Barn Owl.

The session will take place on Friday 18 July between 8.30-10.30pm.

Charity receives vital backing for Dartmoor project

Leading conservation charity Devon Wildlife Trust is celebrating the news that it has received a £38,000 funding boost from SITA Trust to support its Emsworthy Mire Restoration Project.
