Two rare and distinctive fungi species have been spotted on Devon Wildlife Trust nature reserves in one week. Hazel gloves (Hypocreopsis rhododendri) fungus can be found in hazel woodland in western Britain. It was recorded for the first time at Devon Wildlife Trust’s Vealand Farm nature reserve, near Holsworthy, last week. Likened in appearance to miniature rubber gloves, this fungus sometimes grows on blackthorn, but is primarily found on hazel. The exhibition takes its direction from Common Ground, a Dorset charity who explored the relationship between nature and culture through areas such as music, sculpture, poetry and film. The Devon Guild is breaking new ground by using the media of craft to celebrate the charity’s idea of ‘local distinctiveness’ or ‘the unique characteristics such as customs, myths or plants’ - of a neighbourhood or small community.
Celebrating home-grown making with a showcase of 12 craftmakers who use materials which are locally distinct, natural or recycled. The show explores local heritage and environment using traditional skills and resources combined with contemporary approaches. Exhibits include organic sculpture, roadkill materials, installations and recycled jewellery. Open daily. Free. 10am-5.30pm
The people at Ashfords are taking up bee keeping in a bid to help the national initiative to protect bees and boost their population
As part of Ashfords' Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, it is hoped the new Ashfords' bee colony will thrive, and help pollinate flowers and shrubs in the area around the Sowton Industrial Estate.
Ashfords is currently trialling the "bee initiative" at its headquarters in Exeter, with the aim of expanding this idea to its other offices across the country. .

Summer at the Axe Estuary Wetlands near Seaton can only mean one thing – it’s time for the Wet ’n’ Wild Summer Festival on Saturday August 16, organised by East Devon District Council’s Countryside team.
