The Exeter Daily reports with great sadness tonight that former Exeter Chiefs skipper and hero, Tom Hayes, has been forced to retire from the game with immediate effect.

The 33 year-old forward from Limerick, Ireland has had his hand forced by an ongoing struggle with back trouble.

Hayes can walk away from Sandy Park with his head held high and with fond memories of his time with the Chiefs, and what a time he's had. Tom has been at the heart of the club's successes since he arrived in Exeter in 2008 and will undoubtedly be sorely missed by fellow players, the coaches and...

Crime figures – good news or bad?

This week we saw the publication of the three-monthly crime figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS). As police and crime commissioner it is inevitable that the media will want me to comment in simple sound bites - is this good news or bad news news - so I thought I would clarify why I have been guarded in some of the interviews I have carried out this week. ONS figures are, and always have been, released three or four months in arrears - in this case to the end of June 2013, whereas, day to day, myself and the chief constable are dealing with up to the minute statistics about...

He told the programme how site traffic had rocketed in recent weeks and that further...

Building UK's biggest prison: a titanic waste of money

Government plans to build Britain’s biggest prison are a titanic waste of money that will do nothing to cut crime, the Howard League for Penal Reform said today (10 January).

In a move which echoes the ill-fated Titan jail proposal of the last decade, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has announced that it is to start feasibility work on a new prison that could hold more than 2,000 prisoners.

The project - combined with the planned construction of four new mini-prisons - follows the opening of the G4S-run Oakwood Prison near Wolverhampton, which has been dogged with problems...
