Museum collections inspire new music

A Chinese gown, a giraffe and a collection of pocket watches are amongst the museum objects that have inspired the composers of new music which will be performed in the galleries at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter. Fragile images of Devon on show for the first time in a century

Thousands of fragile and irreplaceable images of Devon have been preserved for future generations to see thanks to University of Exeter experts.

People can step back in time and experience what it would have been like to live in Roman Exeter thanks to virtual reality.

The city’s rich history – and the treasures at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery – are now part of the hugely popular and addictive Minecraft game.

A new map shows what Exeter’s Roman fortress could have looked like and is available to download for free while playing Minecraft. This joins another map, also inspired by RAMM’s collections, designed to represent 18th-century Exeter when the city walls still stood.

Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum has won Gold in the 2017 Devon Tourism Awards for Large Attraction. RAMM also scooped a Silver award for Access and Inclusivity and Bronze award for Artistic, Cultural and Learning Attraction.

The award ceremony was held in Plymouth Guildhall and hosted by travel commentator Simon Calder and special guest, Polar Explorer Anne Daniels. 76 awards were presented to winners from 25 categories, including recognition for restaurants, hotels, attractions, guided tours, holiday parks and many more.

An unusual North American joins the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery’s collections.

Underweight but with no sign of predation, a sora rail (Porzana carolina) was found on RSPB’s Exminster Marsh on a cold morning in October 2016. The little bird was dead: a sad end for the second recorded sora rail to visit Devon. It is 20th recorded sighting for the UK.

New art residencies will help people discover riverside parks

Two artists are creating opportunities for people to explore, reflect on and shape the future of Exeter’s green spaces.

The artwork is part of an overall plan to improve the Riverside Valley Park, which is loved by visitors and residents of Exeter alike.

Exeter City Council, which owns the land, has identified ways to improve the Park, set out in the Riverside and Ludwell Valley Park Masterplan. Suggestions include more opportunities for adventurous play, new orchards and flower-rich meadows.

BP Portrait Award 2017 comes to Exeter

Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery will be the first venue outside London to host the BP Portrait Award 2017 exhibition.

Following its initial showing at the National Portrait Gallery, London, from 22 June to 24 September, the exhibition will be at RAMM from 4 October to 3 December followed by the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and then Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens.

Gardener, writer and broadcaster Toby Buckland has replanted the flower beds leading up to the Garden entrance to Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery as a tribute to its collections.
