RAMM saves Gilbert Spoon

A rare example of Elizabethan craftsmanship has been saved by the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM).

RAMM was able to save a The Gilbert Spoon made in Exeter between 1580-90 with help from the art fund and the V&A Purchase Grant Fund.

The spoon made from silver by John Edes has been judged unique for it’s quality, design and historical significance.

From 26 October the Gilbert Spoon will feature in RAMM’s Tudor age: West Country to World’s End exhibition which offers a snapshot into lives of Tudor era Devonians.

On Saturday 14 September, naturalist and broadcaster Nick Baker will share his fascination with one of the most important collections of bones in the body – skulls.

With a selection of skulls from his and the collection at Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) Nick will take an informative, intimate, sometimes surreal and irreverent look into the world of skulls and a skull collector. He will explore the origins, purpose and mechanics of these bones and how they develop, and delve into the realm of symbolism and imagery.

RAMM contributes to 'world first' exhibition

The British Geological Survey has launched the world’s first 3D virtual fossil collection to the public, including some from Exeter's RAMM.

Thousands of 3D digital fossil models, plus several thousand high quality images, many in 3D, can now be browsed and downloaded for free.

The GB3D Type Fossils Online project, funded by Jisc, has taken fossils from museum displays and dusty drawers and made them available for academics, researchers and fossil enthusiasts to enjoy at their leisure.

Join local artist Naomi Hart in the birds gallery at RAMM, In Fine Feather, on Wednesday 21 August between 10am and 1pm, to learn about brent geese and take part in a collaborative, worldwide, art-science project.

Exeter is an overwintering site of international importance and the geese can be found on Topsham marshes, Exminster marshes and Starcross golf course throughout the winter. The unique exhibition, Art Everywhere, has transformed thousands of poster sites and billboards into iconic artworks from the national collection.
