Exeter’s much-loved Red Coat Guided Tours – a team of volunteer guides - has been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK.
The Red Coats, a familiar sight around Exeter, operate throughout the year. The free guided walking tours offer visitors the perfect way to explore Exeter and get to know the city’s history.
Representatives from the Red Coats Guided Tours attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May, along with other recipients of this year’s Award.
With sixteen different tours to choose from, and six new Red Coat Guides joining the team, Exeter City Council is celebrating the launch of a busy Summer Tour Programme.
The Council has been providing free Red Coat Guided walking tours of the city for twenty-eight years. To keep up with demand, a training programme for willing volunteers has taken place every couple of years, with this spring seeing the successful recruitment of six new Guides.

Budding ghost hunters can get into the ‘spirit’ of Halloween this year by taking part in the ever popular Spooks and Broomsticks Tours.
Run by Exeter’s Red Coat Guides, these FREE guided walking tours take place on Thursday 29 October and depart from outside the Royal Clarence Hotel, Cathedral Yard, from 6.15pm, with the last tour departing at 7pm. The tours are suitable for all ages, and no booking is required.
