Cotley Farm Christmas encourages visitors to ‘Keep it Real’

Cotley Farm Christmas is inviting visitors to its East Devon Christmas tree farm to join their ‘Keep it Real’ campaign. Encouraging them to not only join in the festive family activities held at the farm, but opt for a real tree this Christmas. The benefits of a real Christmas tree from a local producer and supplier can far outweigh that of a plastic tree, which will ultimately end in a landfill without ever decomposing. The carbon footprint is much lower than a plastic tree and there are no air miles with a Cotley Christmas tree as the trees are grown in fields near the farm. For each...

Cotley Christmas Tree Farm welcomed a highly unexpected arrival in the summer of this year.

Cotley Farm owner, Helen Bowker, says “It turns out that the calf was born a little early and her mother didn’t have any milk at first. Even if she had, the baby reindeer was so small she couldn’t have reached the teats! So for the first 10 days of her life, I had to hand feed her with a bottle. Luckily she grew quickly and was soon able to feed from her mother – which was a relief as reindeer milk is 20% fat so is hard to substitute for a long period. This just goes to show how vulnerable...

East Devon’s Cotley Farm’s welcomed a baby reindeer to the herd in May this year.

It’s rare for baby reindeer to be born in this country – and to survive, as the survival rates are not high over the first few months. The last calf the farm are aware of being born in the Westcountry was in Cornwall in 2010.

Cotley’s owner Helen Bowker said, “It was a bit of a surprise all round to be honest. We hadn’t thought Spice was young enough to be in calf and she’d always been a bit tubby but we knew there was an outside chance. However, she had shown no signs of labour in the morning...

Santa’s helpers were out in force at the Axe Estuary Wetlands in Seaton last Sunday to track down a 'reindeer' and take part in Christmas crafts.

These included making fat ball Christmas gifts for wild birds and magic food to sprinkle in the garden and catch the eye of the team of reindeer pulling the sleigh.

The day was cold and crisp with sparkling sunshine and children and adults alike had great fun following the clues around the nature reserve to track down the missing reindeer – now happily all accounted for!
