Twelve local groups meet in Exeter tonight for a locally sourced dinner using food from producers using renewable energy.

Regen SW, a centre for sustainable energy expertise based in Exeter, is tonight hosting a community energy feast to celebrate the volunteers and groups working tirelessly to establish community energy projects in the region. These projects are being set up to benefit local communities and generate income to make them more vibrant and sustainable places to live.

SunGift named UK Solar Installer of the Year

Exeter renewable expert SunGift Energy has collected a top national award, after being named the UK’s number one installer of solar panels.

The renewable energy specialist, which is based on Christow Road, Marsh Barton Industrial Estate, Exeter, picked up the Solar Power Portal Installer of the Year Award at a glittering ceremony, which was held at Birmingham’s NEC.

The awards follow a rigorous assessment process where judges initially narrowed down hundreds of national nominations to five finalists, before naming SunGift the overall winner.

Community group to put solar powered vegetables on the menu

A local energy co-op have signed an agreement with Exeter veg-box scheme and online farm shop Shillingford Organics to set-up the city’s first ever source of community-owned electricity – and in turn create an income for much needed community projects.

Exeter Community Energy (ECOE) is getting local people to team up and invest in solar panels which will supply the farm with cheap electricity. By selling electricity to the farm, they will create an income which can be used for community projects that tackle fuel poverty and energy efficiency.

£100m more for Green Deal Home Improvement Fund

Ed Davey has announced there will be a second phase of the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund (GDHIF) totalling £100m.

Applications for the new phase of the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund, designed to help people make energy saving improvements to their home, will open to applications before the end of November. The Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) are looking to improve the initiative in light of issues arising from phase 1.

Cricket club bowled over by energy savings

St Thomas Cricket and Sports Club in Marsh Barton is reaping the rewards of a new 12kw solar installation that could slash the clubs electricity bills by up to 50%.

The club, which is now run as an event, conference and function venue, decided to go ahead with the 48 panel installation after the club manager cut his own electricity bills by 20% following the installation of solar panels on the roof of his own home.
