Devon County Council’s Cabinet today (Wednesday 13 April) agreed its highway maintenance budgets for this financial year.
The Council has received £38.785 million of funding from the Department for Transport for capital maintenance of its highway network, the longest of any authority in the country at 8,000 miles. Cabinet decided how the money will be used for structural repairs that extend the life of everything that makes up the highway, including repairs to road surfaces, retaining walls, bridges, and street lighting.
In addition, Councillors also approved the spending...
Devon County Council is expecting to complete repairs to a section of the sea wall at Lympstone early this week.
The authority responded after high tides and rough seas over the festive break took their toll on the length of the old masonry wall on Sowden Lane, creating a hole the size of a small car.
The damage to the wall, which supports the highway, was reported to the County Council on 1st January and was assessed the same day by the on-call bridge inspector.
The area was fenced off and the site made safe and repairs got underway earlier this week.
The A3072 at Bickleigh will be closed for eight weeks from Monday (15 June) as essential work is carried out to replace a section of safety barriers.
The existing barrier has been damaged and needs replacing urgently to maintain the safety of motorists using the road.

Due to the difficult terrain along this road, a reinforced concrete...
People are being urged to check with their insurance firms before paying traders for household repair works.

Devon and Somerset Trading Standards has issued the warning, stating that consumers can be left out of pocket when insurance companies don't reimburse the full amount paid to a trader.
The situation can be avoided, say Trading Standards Officers, by following simple steps before committing to work....

It is the first time councils have been given locked-in funding over this length of time, which will help them plan ahead and save money for the taxpayer.
