New ‘Horizon’ parking charges irk Exeter leisure users

Shoppers at Exe Bridges retail park are now facing parking fees, putting an end to drivers being able to leave their cars for free.

The retail park, which is home to the likes of M&S Foodhall, Boots, and TK Maxx, gives everyone parking there an hour free, but staying for more than that could cost at least £6.90.

For anyone who buys something from one of the retailers, they are given a voucher to scan at a parking machine, which validates parking for up to three hours.

Exeter's Riverside Leisure Centre reopens

The pool and health suite at Exeter’s Riverside Leisure Centre has re-opened after a four-year closure.

Millions of pounds have been spent on refurbishing the building, following a fire in February 2017 which closed the entire facility for months.

The gym and sports halls were back in operation later that year, but whilst fire damage was being repaired, unrelated structural weaknesses were revealed.

Exeter City Council leader Phil Bialyk officially re-opened the pool and health suite at a short ceremony on Saturday and said it was “absolutely” worth the wait....

The reopening of the pool and health suite at Exeter’s Riverside Leisure Centre will not take place early in the New Year as previously expected.

The building suffered fire and smoke damage to surface coatings, mechanical and engineering plant, roof decking and structural elements, as well as smoke damage throughout the facility, following the blaze in February 2017.

The sports hall, gym and fitness studios reopened to the public soon after the fire. But the pool and health suite remain closed.

Exeter City Council has revealed more details about the work being carried out to assess the full extent of fire damage at the city’s Riverside Leisure Centre. The task of assessing damage to the roof caused by the fire on February 21 is complex and time consuming, and the operator cannot reopen the pool and health suite until it is safe and appropriate to do so. A report following a full structural assessment of the roof is expected to be completed by the end of August. Work has begun to reopen Exeter’s Riverside Leisure Centre following last month’s devastating fire.

A statement from Legacy Leisure, which operates Riverside Leisure Centre, on behalf of Exeter City council said: “Following the fire on 21 February, the damage has been assessed and work has now begun to reopen the leisure centre facilities in stages.

Investigation launched into cause of fire at Riverside Leisure Centre

An investigation has been launched to determine how the blaze started at Exeter’s Riverside Leisure centre yesterday.

Emergency services worked together to tackle the major incident.

At around 4.20pm on Tuesday 21 February, Devon and Somerset Fire Service (DSFS) alerted police to a major fire within Riverside Leisure Centre, near to the Exe Bridges junction. A number of emergency support vehicles including around 17 fire appliances attended the scene to deal with this incident.

Riverside fire brought under control

Ten pumping appliances attened a fire at the Riverside Leisure Centre, Cowick Street, Exeter yesterday.

The blaze was this morning under control and all roads in the area open as usual.

The fire was reported in the first floor sauna, and the health suite was well alight.

Appliances attended from Danes Castle, Middlemoor, Topsham, Exmouth, Crediton, Ottery St Mary, Cullompton, Teignmouth, Bovey Tracey and the aerial appliances from Torquay and Exeter.

Twenty people were removed from the swimming pool and the leisure centre was also evacuated.

Arsenal Soccer Schools will be running a Christmas Soccer School at the Riverside Leisure Centre in Exeter during the Christmas school holidays which will include a free swim.

All children will enjoy festive football games to improve their skills, receive an Arsenal Soccer Schools gift and a Christmas treat from the Arsenal Soccer Schools team.
