South West Coast Path secures £1m investment

The South West Coast Path Association has been successful in their bid to the Coastal Communities Fund to secure £1 million investment in the South West Coast Path.

This project will repair, improve and promote the South West Coast Path (SWCP). Funds will help with 32 urgent repair works to the path, in addition to a range of projects providing information boards and signage, events and marketing. This will create and safeguard around 788 jobs from construction, management and tourism generated by the path.

The South West Coast Path is inviting businesses to partner with the charity during 2014 to deliver some vital path improvements and protect this great tourism asset.

Recent research has showed that during 2012 the Coast Path had 8.6 million users across the South West which have generated around £436m to the area, an increase of almost 15% in the past three years - helping support 9,771 full-time equivalent jobs.

Recognised as one of the UK’s favourite walks with a reputation as being among the greatest long distance hikes in the world.

Voting opens for the Top Dog walk in the West competition

The second annual competition to find the best dog walk along the South West Coast Path has been launched this week backed by the Kennel Club’s access adviser Stephen Jenkinson, an expert on where dog owners can go and what they can do in the countryside. The winning voter will win a holiday at one of Holiday Cottages 800 dog-friendly cottages in the region worth £400.

Re-routed coast path officially open

A re-routed section of the South West Coast Path at Seaton was officially opened on Thursday 19th December.

The original route of the path was damaged in the landslip at Old Beer Road during storms in July 2012. The road has been permanently closed after a geotechnical review found that there was a high risk of further failure and the coastpath was diverted.

A popular section of the South West Coast Path, around Ayrmer Cove in South Devon, which had become narrow due to erosion, has been widened thanks to the Great South West Walk and sponsorship from Parkdean Holidays. Erosion has been a recurring issue for the South West Coast Path with landslides on the coast being reported frequently. South West Coast Path repairs carried out at Bucks Mills

Funding has allowed National Trust rangers to replace a badly worn out flight of steps at the pretty village of Bucks Mills on the North Devon coast. The steps have also been resurfaced and are now ready to help, both locals and visitors alike, access this wonderful section of the coast and enjoy the breathtaking views. The funding also allowed a new way marker to be bought and installed to help people navigate their way around.
