Seven years after it should have welcomed passengers, Marsh Barton’s long-awaited new £16 million train station has been formally opened by the transport secretary.
Regular services will call at the station, which serves the city’s largest trading estate, from Tuesday. A new cycle and pedestrian bridge is part of the project.
Trains were initially due to call at Marsh Barton from December 2016, but setbacks, including spiralling costs and protracted discussions with the rail industry, led to considerable delays.
The new Marsh Barton Railway Station will open to the public on Tuesday 4 July 2023.
The £16 million project has been delivered by Devon County Council in collaboration with Network Rail and Great Western Railway (GWR) and built by construction and civil engineering specialist firm GRAHAM.
The scheme has also involved the development of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge, which opened in April, improving active travel links between Alphington, Marsh Barton, and the Riverside Valley Park.
Construction of the station itself was completed several weeks ago but as...
Digby & Sowton station’s 21st birthday on Monday 23 May was celebrated in style with a giant birthday cake cut by Cllr Andrew Leadbetter, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Economy and Transport in an event at the station, which is on the Exeter – Exmouth “Avocet Line”.
Present to help with the celebrations (and eat the cake) were members of the Avocet Line Rail Users’ Group, including Vice Chair Noel Harrison, Anette Grahns of the Digby Community Association and Richard Burningham, Manager of the Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership.
Exeter’s St James’ Park Station platform garden now has lavender, rosemary, thyme and wildflowers to encourage bees and butterflies and make the station more attractive for rail passengers on the Avocet Line from Exeter to Exmouth.
This is thanks to the joint efforts of Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership, Great Western Railway, the Avocet Line Rail Users Group, Devon Wildlife Trust, St Sidwell’s CE Primary School and Exeter City Football Club Senior Reds over two recent planting days.
On Tuesday 19 April, children from St Sidwell’s CE Primary School joined Devon Wildlife...
