Around 780 streetlights will be switched off overnight in some residential streets in Topsham and the St Loyes area of Exeter from Monday 1 August.

Work to upgrade more than 24,000 streetlights to LED lighting will continue across Devon next month (April).
The £10.2 million scheme, using Challenge Funding which Devon County Council received following a successful bid to the Department for Transport, will convert streetlights to lower wattage LED lighting, and around 5,000 columns will also be replaced as part of the project.

The AA has warned that part night street lighting schemes plans like the one recently adopted in Exeter may be putting motorists at greater risk of accidents.
The breakdown recovery group claims that, while night time road accidents have fallen in recent years this fall is significantly less on unlit urban roads.
Overall, from 2007 to 2012, AA report a 19.6% reduction in road accidents along town and city roads where street lights were on shrank to 8.8% where drivers, cyclists, bikers and pedestrians travelled in darkness.
