Devon Air Ambulance is sometimes called to assist with Inter Hospital Transfers (IHT) but more recently, they have undertaken a new ‘Rapid Transfer Service’ for stroke patients.

Strokes are the second most common cause of death worldwide. 85% of strokes are caused by a blockage (a clot called a thrombus) in the small blood vessels of the brain, and the remaining 15% occur as a result of a bleed in the brain. Administering emergency clot-busting drugs has been the mainstay treatment for many years but risks further complications. Developments in treating these thrombolytic strokes...

The number of strokes occurring in men aged between 40 and 54 has rocketed by almost 50% in less than 15 years, according to the Stroke Association.

An analysis of hospital admission data by the charity, to mark Action on Stroke Month 2015, reveals that in 2000, there were over 4,260 hospital admissions for stroke among men aged between 40 and 54 in England. This figure soared to 6,221 in 2014 – an increase of 46%. It is thought that the rise is due to increasing sedentary and unhealthy lifestyles, and changes in hospital admission practice.

The charity’s research shows the...

Each year in the UK over 110,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke resulting in 60,000 deaths annually. Stroke costs the NHS £2.8 billion pounds a year, £1 billion more than the cost of coronary heart disease.

To improve outcomes for stroke patients in the UK a unique on line training course (accredited by the UK Stroke Forum, Education and Training) has been launched to support clinicians in recognising patients who present with the more subtle signs of a stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA).
