Consultation underway for bus improvements in Exeter city centre

People are being asked to have their say on plans for a new contraflow bus lane in Exeter city centre.

A consultation has been launched today (Monday 17 July) to give people an opportunity to comment on proposals to install a “bus gate” on the one-way section of New North Road between Longbrook Street and Sidwell Street, outside John Lewis.

The scheme is part of Devon County Council’s vision for delivering improvements to bus services across the county in the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).

Food to be sold past best before date in Devon

Convenience stores in Crediton, Exeter and Exmouth will be selling selected products past their ‘best before' date as it relates to quality, not the safety of the product.

With the aim of keeping more food in the human food chain, Southern Co-op has expanded its Reducing Our Foodprint initiative with products being reduced to just 20p.

Now available in more than 100 Co-operative Food stores across the south of England, the waste reduction scheme aims to keep as much produce as possible in the food chain and reduce the amount sent off for anaerobic digestion.

Two in three teachers in the South West don’t know how to teach a deaf child

Two thirds of teachers across the South East say they don’t know how to educate deaf students, a new survey from the National Deaf Children’s Society suggests.

The poll, carried out among 504 of the region’s primary and secondary school teachers, reveals that 67% don’t feel confident they can adapt the curriculum and teach a deaf child effectively.

Almost all respondents (96%) said if they were teaching a deaf pupil, they’d need ongoing support from someone with expert knowledge, such as a Teacher of the Deaf. However, one in three (34%) had received no such support....

8,000 companies benefit from Regional Growth Fund

The Regional Growth Fund established in 2010 by the Deputy Prime Minister has now supported 8,000 companies to grow and thrive across England through a series of 400 projects and programmes. The Fund has created and safeguarded 100,000 jobs and distributed more than £1 billion across the country.

For the first time, the Deputy Prime Minister is confirming the total number of projects and programmes that are underway thanks to the Fund.

Free health checks for Devon farmers

Farmers in Devon are being encouraged to have a free NHS Health Check to minimise their risk of developing common lifestyle-related conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, stroke and dementia.

The check is a free midlife ‘MOT’ for adults aged from 40 to 74 who don’t have an existing cardiovascular condition.

The check, which takes 20 to 30 minutes, involves a few simple questions and some straightforward tests to calculate your risk of developing serious but preventable illnesses.
