A Dartmoor woodland has been given a tidy-up thanks to a team of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers. Working with Dartmoor National Park’s Rangers Ella Briens and Ethan Parsons and Dartmoor Headwaters Project Officer Kerry Smith, the group spent a Sunday morning removing tree guards from a native woodland in the Dean Burn valley near Buckfastleigh. Seventeen volunteers joined Ella, Ethan and Kerry for the volunteer event on January 9 and the collective hard work was a success because they collected up hundreds of tree-guards – filling five big dumpy bags. It’s hoped the tree-guards can...

New partnership for local woodland

Holyford Woods Local Nature Reserve is now being managed by East Devon District Council’s Countryside Team in partnership with Axe Vale & District Conservation Society (AVDCS), following the dissolution of the long-standing Holyford Woodland Trust.

Holyford Woodland Trust (HWT) was formed in 2001 when South West Water put the wooded valley up for sale and the cost of purchase to secure this important wild space for nature was met by East Devon District Council and community fundraising, led by HWT. Since then, much good work has taken place within the woodland, to maintain and...

The County Council has teamed up with the Woodland Trust and the Devon Ash Dieback Resilience Forum to encourage communities and landowners to plant more trees.

Ten trees were planted in the grounds of County Hall last week by pupils from St Leonard’s Primary School and members of the Devon Youth Parliament as the Council marked National Tree Week and joined the Woodland Trust’s Big Climate Fightback.

It was also an opportunity to launch the new schemes. Devon County Council, in association with the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity the Woodland Trust, is offering...

National Tree Week - from 23rd November to 1st December – is the UK's largest annual tree celebration, and marks the start of the winter tree planting season. One locally-based conservation charity is using the occasion to shine a spotlight on some of the many trees in its care.

Wild Planet Trust is the conservation charity behind Paignton Zoo. The zoo is more famous for animals than trees, although it is pleasantly-wooded. Often overlooked are the Clennon local nature reserve adjoining the zoo and the Primley public open space across the road, both managed by the Trust.

Council plants over 10,000 trees in Exeter

More than 10,000 trees have been planted in Exeter since the year 2000, the City Council has revealed.

Many of the trees were planted across the city as part of the Council’s Urban Woodland project but others have been introduced into parks and open spaces over the years.

The City Council places a high value on trees across the city. Damaged trees are replaced with new ones and the Council works hard to ensure the city stays green, benefiting the lives of residents, visitors and the environment itself.

Today the City Council helped plant a small-leaved lime tree (...

Volunteers put their back into it at the Woods!

Volunteers from Axe Vale & District Conservation Society (AVDCS) and the Holyford Woodland Trust spent last Saturday in the glorious surroundings of Holyford Woods, working hard to create a new path through the Seaton Down Copse area of the woods.

Although it was a perfect day to be in the woods, the nature of the work was pretty tough – digging out steps and levelling out very stony ground on a steep wooded valley! The hard work was offset by the sight of bluebells shooting up throughout the woods showing that spring is truly on its way during a well-earned lunch break....
