EVERYONE’S favourite family-friendly festival, the Dartmoor Folk Festival, returns from Friday, August 9 to Sunday, August 11.

Those who go along can enjoy the very best music, song and dance from Dartmoor and beyond - and many of the events and activities are free or by donation.

A beautiful little festival, it takes place in the villages of South Zeal and South Tawton.

It will be the 47th annual festival and top local and national folk artists will be attending.

From the legendary co-creator of the Bagpuss songs, to the voice on the stunning soundtrack to Guy Ritchie’s forthcoming Hollywood blockbuster, this autumn’s Baring-Gould Folk Weekend in Devon promises to be a rare treat for lovers of traditional music in all its forms.

In fact, the 18th annual festival in the Dartmoor town of Okehampton on Friday 21 to Sunday 23 October could well be the most varied yet, with a deliberate switch by its organisers to showcase more Devon-based singers and musicians as well as established names from across the UK.

Fresh feel to Sidmouth seafront for Folk Week

Sidmouth’s Folk Week will see some changes this year to where the trading stalls are sited along the Esplanade, in order to provide more room for performers to entertain the thousands of people who attend the event.

The move will bring a fresh feel to the seafront as the Folk Week organisers, Sidmouth Town Council, the police and East Devon District Council’s Licensing, Environmental Health and StreetScene services have been working in partnership together behind the scenes to plan the event.

Folk Festival thanks compere Tony Beard for 35 years’ service

TONY Beard, the Wag from Widecombe, recently received a gift from the Dartmoor Folk Festival Association (DFFA), which organises the annual three-day Dartmoor Folk Festival each August.

Tony has been the compere for the Music Hall held on the last night of the festival for the past 35 years.

In recognition of this, the festival association commissioned South Zeal artist Kari McGowan to paint a watercolour to convey thanks and appreciation of everything he has done.

The Dartmoor Folk Festival is one of the top family-friendly folk events in the South West.

It provides the perfect opportunity to catch bright new folk acts, high-calibre national and local artists and established performers, all in the foothills of Dartmoor.

Festival events and activities are suitable for all ages, and there is a hugely-successful dedicated children's festival run alongside the main event.

Jason is Folk Festival's step dance champ

Jason Rice beat 15 other contenders at the Step Dance Championship held at the Dartmoor Folk Festival to take home both trophies.

Jason, originally from Copplestone, who lives and works in Exeter, said that he has been step dancing since he was in his late teens.

He previously won in 2001 and 2010 and was delighted to take the title again at the weekend.

Some years ago Jason travelled to the USA to demonstrate the traditional dance which is danced on a 15 inch square step, with a routine similar to line dancing.

Exefest – Exeter Canalside Folk Festival

After the success of last year’s festival, plans are well underway for the second year of Exefest – Exeter Canalside Folk Festival.

Headliner Melrose Quartet, nominated for Best Group at the 2014 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, is the coming-together of multi-award winning duo Nancy Kerr and James Fagan, and legendary Sheffield duo Richard and Jess Arrowsmith.

Top acts to play first Lyme Regis Folk Weekend

Lyme Regis is set to become a top annual venue for folk music when it hosts the first Lyme Folk Weekend at the end of August.
