After the shocking pictures of children dying in the Mediterranean, people across Devon are rushing to donate money and goods to refugees caught in the camps at Calais.
On Thursday 10th September hundreds of people will be bringing their donations to Exeter Friends Meeting House.
The collection event has been organised on facebook in a very short time.
Over 200 people signed up to attend within the first 48 hours after the initial announcement.
“People are being astonishingly generous” said Ghee Bowman, one of the organisers “our crowdfunder page has raised...
Dartmoor Cuckoos have reached the Congo rainforest ahead of schedule this year, at a time when they would normally be taking a break and recovering body condition during their long migration.
It seems the dry weather conditions may have encouraged them to head south weeks earlier than expected. The cuckoos have been fitted with satellite tags as part of a national project to monitor migration routes.
The project is being co-ordinated by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO). Emsworthy was amongst the first UK Cuckoos to arrive in the Congo rainforest and has been joined...
A tiny bat found in the Netherlands is believed to provide the first direct evidence that British bats migrate over the sea between the UK and mainland Europe.
The bat, a Nathusius’ pipistrelle, flew from Blagdon near Bristol across the country and over the North Sea before settling in a farm building near the coast in Friesland – a direct journey of 596 kilometres (370 miles).
Bat experts in both countries are working together to learn more about this remarkable journey and its implications for bat conservation and offshore windfarms.
Figures released by the Office for National Statistics today show that the UK population could rise by nearly 10 million over the next 25 years. The ONS figures project the UK could have a population of 73.3million up from an estimated population of 63.7 million in 2012. A much larger proportion of this population will be much older as well putting more pressure on services as the number of people aged over 80, will double. The projections forecast an average UK annual population growth of 0.6 per cent until 2037. More than half of this half of the 9.6m increase is down to an increased...
These geese are part of a global, public-participatory piece I am working on in collaboration with Professor Stuart Bearhop of Exeter University. I am sending out 10,000 postcards in the shape of migratory geese all over the world, asking people to write on them and post them back to me. Those that return to complete their ‘migration’ will hang in a huge installation in the shape of a flock of birds at Hope Hall, Heavitree in Exeter during Devon Open Studios in September.
As individuals, birds are vulnerable, insignificant - en masse, in migration, they signify a powerful force of...
Join local artist Naomi Hart in the birds gallery at RAMM, In Fine Feather, on Wednesday 21 August between 10am and 1pm, to learn about brent geese and take part in a collaborative, worldwide, art-science project.
Exeter is an overwintering site of international importance and the geese can be found on Topsham marshes, Exminster marshes and Starcross golf course throughout the winter. In spring they migrate north, reaching their breeding grounds in the Russian Arctic. A brent goose can also be found in the In Fine Feather display and their call can be heard on the interactive...
