One of Exeter’s most successful community-owned social enterprises, The Real Food Store in Paris Street, Exeter celebrates its 5th birthday on Thursday 31 March and will be running a special in-store competition for customers during the week.

Over the past five years the store has won a number of awards including the Best Independent Food Retailer at the Food Reader Awards and several from DEBI (Devon Environmental Business Initiative) that recognizes its commitment to environmental principles.

Pop up restaurant a roaring success

Customers of Exeter's The Real Food Store and Pickle Shack pop-up restaurant regulars were indulged with three courses of local fare following the successful collaboration of the two businesses.

The Real Food Store is a community owned store and cafe consisting of over 300 members, staff and board members.

The store was set-up by enthusiastic food lovers who upheld values of sustainability, locality and seasonality, ideals which mirror those of Michelin trained chef and founder of Pickle Shack, Josh McDonald-Johnson.

Chagfarm, a new not-for-profit Community Interest Company located in Chagford, Devon, has launched an ambitious Crowdfunder Campaign ending on 28th March.

The 8-week campaign will see the Farm Directors, Sylvan and Davon Friend, seeking £15,000 for more farming equipment and facilities to expand their raw goats’ milk dairy and ensure the continued resilience of the local community’s food supply. Chagfarm Open Day

A monthly open day at Chagford Community Farm. A chance to come and meet members, directors and the animals.

Get stuck in and help out with work around the farm or just turn up for one of the farm tours at 11.30am and 2.30pm.

Things start at 10.30am and normally end at 4pm. Lunch is served at about 1pm, please feel free to bring some cake or biscuits to contribute, otherwise the rustic farm lunch will include meat and vegetarian options.

Meet the supplier event at The Real Food Store

If you have some free time on your hands between 11.30am-1.30pm on Thursday 6th February, then why not pop down to The Real Food Store to try some delicious chocolate samples.

Manna Bon Bon, a brand new Charmouth based business, are bringing their delicious treats to Exeter on Thursday as part of The Real Food Store's ' meet the supplier' event.

As well as being able to sample some treats, visitors will also get to meet Manna Bon Bon's creator Karen.

Following a fine summer for growing grapes in the UK, Devon vineyards have a lot to celebrate and an Exeter city centre food store is promoting their success. A range of locally produced Devon wines is being launched at the Real Food Store on Tuesday 19 November with a special wine tasting evening between 6pm and 8pm.

Three vineyards, all within 12 miles of the city, are supplying wine to the community owned store which opened in March 2011. Pebblebed, at Clyst St George, Yearlstone, at Bickleigh, and Manstree based at Shillingford St George.

Local vegetable delivery business expands

Penny from Penny's Recipes is expanding her local, organic, vegetable order and delivery business. Penny provides a service for people at workplaces and community centres so they can order local organic vegetables online and have them delivered to their place of work.

The vegetables are grown by Shillingford Organics, which is located just outside Exeter. The scheme is designed to make local produce available to people who struggle to get to the shops or Farmers' Market. Local bread from Emma's bread will soon be available too.
