Devon and Cornwall Police will introduce a new initiative aimed at challenging, and changing, the behaviour of first time offenders. They may be able to avoid a police record if they sign up to the new scheme and fully comply with it.

Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez has reassured the public that the new ‘GPS Pathfinder’ deferred charging scheme is not ‘soft’ on criminals and is, in fact, more onerous than existing punishment for most first time offenders.

In her recently published Police and Crime Plan, Ms Hernandez pledged to focus on preventing reoffending...

Devon and Cornwall’s Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg has welcomed calls for an independent panel to advise the Government on future proposals for police funding. A report published by the Home Affairs Select Committee says accounting firms, financial experts and the College of Policing should be appointed to assist the Home Office in formulating revised proposals. Last month the Home Office paused its review process after Mr Hogg’s office highlighted serious errors in calculating the funding allocations for police force areas. These errors resulted in forces who had been advised...

A new card designed to help people with autism is launched by Devon partners this week.

Devon & Cornwall police are hoping the autism alert card will help officers and other emergency services identify people on the autistic spectrum, and will support improved engagement.

Police officers will also be provided with awareness information as to how they can adapt and improve their communication style according to an autistic individual’s needs, and better respond to situations involving autistic people.

Carried by people with the condition, the card can potentially...

Number of mentally ill people in police custody falls

Police in Devon and Cornwall have welcomed a new report from the National Police Chief’s Council showing a nationwide reduction in the use of police custody cells as a place of safety for those suffering mental illness.

Historically, police cells have been used to house those people detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983. The Government announced earlier this year that it would seek legislation to prohibit the use of police cells as a place of safety for under-18s and reduce the 72 maximum detention period for adults.

Nationally, there has been a 32 per...

Devon and Cornwall’s Police and Crime Commissioner is calling for action to prevent a continual drain on resources to support national policing. As part of the "mutual aid" agreement, the Devon and Cornwall force is required to provide officers for events such as the NATO summit and Olympics. However Tony Hogg is worried about the impact on effective local policing, particularly during the summer months when more than eight million people visit Devon and Cornwall.

Resources are already fully stretched during this period, and although money is refunded to the force for use of...

Devon and Cornwall Police has donated £2,500 to Mid Devon District Council in an initiative that will see an upgrade to Tiverton town’s CCTV system.

There are currently sixteen CCTV cameras plotted around the town centre and it is hoped that this will be increased by a further two. Images from each camera are sent via a fibre optic cable to the CCTV operating room and recorded on a digital video recorder which can be used in criminal investigations. Devon and Cornwall Police rely on this footage to identify offenders and bring them to justice. In addition to the new cameras, there...
