This all-French evening – both in choice of music and artists – culminates in Debussy’s elegantly flowing masterpiece of Impressionism, following a journey through the composer’s youthful exploration of spring time, a visit to an enchanted forest with elves and knights, and a piano concerto written by master of the instrument, Chopin – dazzling, virtuosic and simply enthralling.

Death and destruction in Exeter Cathedral

Authored by News Desk

Carnage, blood and guts will visit Exeter Cathedral this July 21st in the shape of the Amadeus Orchestra and Bournemouth Symphony Chorus under the baton of Philip Mackenzie.

Of the four pieces to be performed, three of them end in bloodshed! Tchaikovsky’s Fantasy overture Romeo and Juliet famously ends with Romeo drinking poison in the mistaken belief that Juliet is dead, only for her to wake up, find him dead and take her own life with his dagger.

Richard Strauss’ Till Eulenspiegel is based on the eponymous folk hero who mocks authority wherever he goes. Sadly he taunts...

Once again, the BSO returns to Exeter Cathedral for an atmospheric season finale. Scheherazade consisted of “separate, unconnected episodes and pictures” as Rimsky-Korsakov himself put it, from The Arabian Nights: snapshots, in other words, of a world he never knew. It is a triumph of imagination over experience; a feast of sumptuous colours and brilliant instrumental effect by the man who literally wrote the book on orchestration. Much of this brilliance is achieved by continuously dotting the score with passages for solo instruments. The...

Rachmaninov’s elegant, ingenious, and often surprising Third Symphony is bound together by a theme that recurs in various guises and transformations in each movement. This chant-like motto appears quietly at the very opening, scored for the unusual, arresting combination of clarinet, cello and muted horn, giving it the character of a fleeting thought or reminiscence, summoned from the depths of memory. Before long it bursts forth in loud, stern animation and a thunderous, celebratory conclusion, all dark thoughts banished.

After his...

Italy occupied a unique place in the psyches of many 19th century composers, artists and writers. The physical beauty of its architecture and countryside, as well as Italy’s own ancient and rich traditions of art, music and thought inspired many. Strauss embarked on his own journey in early 1886 and was overwhelmed by what he saw. As he travelled, he jotted down musical ideas for what became Aus Italien, including assigning specific keys to correspond with particular places he visited – the warm, lemon-scented Amalfi coast, the Renaissance...

Fabien Gabel, conductor

Frank Braley, piano

Two French extraordinary musicians make their return to Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in this concert. One of the most impressive calling cards in the history of music, The Firebird is a work of such brilliance that it could only have been written by Stravinsky, mixing the orchestral mastery of his Russian mentors with the rhythmic vitality of the revolutionary about to burst out of his shell. The musical language shifts between exotic, chromatic gestures to illustrate the supernatural dimension and the sing-song simplicity of...
