I always felt healthy, and luckily, I haven’t suffered any major health implications, so when I attended my annual health check with my gp, I was surprised to find out that my blood sugar level was 43. This was a high reading, and put me in the pre diabetic category, so I was concerned at first, then realised that there was something I could do to stop it going any higher and reverse it. One area I could control was my weight. I was 14 stone and was referred by my gp to join the NHS/WW (formerly Weight Watchers), Healthier You scheme.

People with learning disabilities are tackling obesity by making YouTube cooking videos as part of a pioneering new project from the disability charity United Response. CookABILITY, which launched in Paignton, Devon, aims to encourage people with learning disabilities, Down’s syndrome and autism to cook for themselves and eat healthy food. At our Woman of the Year ball Penni Ball who runs groups in Pinhoe and Countess Wear, alongside fellow colleagues was congratulated on helping slimmers to lose weight and change their lives by singer and TV presenter Peter Andre.

The team, who run Slimming World groups in Devon, was delighted to get a chance to cuddle up to Peter when he presented the annual Slimming World Awards. The Mysterious Girl singer co-hosted the event with the organisation’s founder and chair Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE.

A weight-loss expert from Exeter has struck gold for the exceptional work she does in helping more than 250 people in the area to lose weight every week.
