150 cats in the South West adopted in 2021 thanks to locals

150 cats from the South West have found their forever homes in the past year, thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Cats Protection’s centres in Cornwall, Exeter and Ferndown helped dozens of locals find a new feline friend in 2021.

One such cat was Scarab, who was originally adopted from the Cornwall Adoption Centre in 2020 but went missing shortly after.

Scarab’s owner, Jayne, searched and searched for him but was unable to find him, despite putting up posters, using social media, and driving around for hours every day.

Researchers at the University of Exeter will team up with international collaborators including NASA to develop advanced new materials that could be used to create sensors in space to detect carbon emissions from Earth, and smaller, lighter mobile phones.

It is among 12 projects announced today bringing together UK and international researchers to develop cutting-edge new technologies, funded through a £17 million investment from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

Exeter Chiefs set to take part in SW’s first region-wide corporate Esports Festival

The Exeter Chiefs rugby team have entered a team for the first corporate esports festival for the whole of the South West, taking place in February 2022.

The two-time Premiership winning club, which also took home the European Rugby Champions Cup in 2020 after beating Paris-based team Racing 92, will enter a three-man team to compete with organisations from across the South West region.

Devon GP surgery Christmas and New Year opening times

Patients across Devon are being reminded that most GP practices will be closed over the festive and New Year period and that if they need medical advice to make use of alternative services such as 111.

Most GP practices will close at the end of the day on Friday 24 December and will re-open again on Wednesday 29 December until Friday 31 December. They will then be closed again from Saturday 1 January until Monday 3 January due the New Year bank holiday.

Exeter mum's crochet challenge keeps Honiton-based Devon Freewheelers blood bike on the road for 1,000 miles

An Exeter mum’s festive challenge to make a charity Christmas mascot for the Devon Freewheelers, based in Honiton, will fuel a blood bike for 1,000 miles.

Tammy Tudor, of Beacon Heath, Exeter, raised £140 by crocheting Christmas coats for teddy bears for the charity to sell at fundraising events.

Exeter Dunelm and customers deliver joy to Sainthill House Care Home this Christmas

Residents at Sainthill House Care Home in Exeter this week received Christmas gifts, courtesy of Dunelm’s generous colleagues and customers.

The donation was the result of the retailer’s Delivering Joy campaign, which saw Exeter shoppers purchase gifts for people in need in their local community.

First launched last year, the initiative saw almost 20,000 gifts donated UK wide in 2020, and Dunelm is on track to donate even more gifts this year.

Foot Anstey trainee solicitor fights food poverty this winter

Olupitan Aganga, Trainee Solicitor at Foot Anstey LLP, has used the firm's CSR hour initiative to volunteer with FoodCycle, the community project charity.

Olupitan, based in Exeter, joined FoodCycle as part of its kitchen staff where she helped cook meals for homeless and vulnerable individuals.

Unprovoked attack in Exeter leaves man with broken jaw

Police investigating an assault in which two men in their 20s were punched in the face in Exeter are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

One of the victims suffered a broken jaw in the unprovoked attack which happened at the Guildhall Shopping Centre between midnight and 12.30am on Sunday 19 December.

A church in Exeter has distributed over 1300 hampers packed full of food to people in need across the community.
