£1.25 million boost puts Exeter at cutting-edge of genomics

A new, state-of-the-art genome sequencing platform will put Exeter on the cutting edge of research into the genomic basis of health and disease.

The Illumina NovaSeq sequencer has just been installed at the University of Exeter, part-funded by over £600,000 from the Wellcome Trust. The investment represents a significant upgrade to Exeter’s ability to sequence whole genomes faster and in much greater depth than before.

Tim Etchells’ To Move In Time sees Forced Entertainment’s welcome return to Exeter

Forced Entertainment has today announced that after a successful run at Edinburgh Fringe this summer To Move In Time, created by Tim Etchells and Forced Entertainment in collaboration with Tyrone Huggins (Black Men Walking, Opening Skinner’s Box) will tour the UK.

The production will open in Cardiff on Tuesday 4 February and continue on to Exeter Phoenix for a one-off performance on Wednesday 19 February. Voters reminded to double check polling station venues on poll cards

Voters in East Devon are reminded to double check their poll cards to ensure that they visit the correct polling station at the General Election next Thursday (Dec 12).

Three polling stations within the district, which come under the Tiverton and Honiton Parliamentary constituency, have changed venues for this election.

The changes are:

Gateway polling station has moved to Seaton Marshlands;

Colyton Town Hall polling station has moved to Reece Strawbridge Centre

Offwell Village Hall polling station has moved to Offwell Sports and Social Club

If you want a festive feast with a flavour of the Middle East, step into Exeter’s Comptoir Libanais this Christmas.

You won’t hear Slade, Wizard or Mariah (thankfully) and the décor is refreshingly tinsel-free.

What is guaranteed however, is a tongue-tingling table full of treats.

The mixed mezze starter is a meal in itself and comes with two vegan and two meat dishes.

The vine leaves stuffed with rice, pine nuts and pomegranate seeds were surprisingly tasty, fresh and fragrant, as was the Aubergine with Tahina, which was laced with garlic parsley and Sumac...

Tree planting initiatives take root

The County Council has teamed up with the Woodland Trust and the Devon Ash Dieback Resilience Forum to encourage communities and landowners to plant more trees.

Ten trees were planted in the grounds of County Hall last week by pupils from St Leonard’s Primary School and members of the Devon Youth Parliament as the Council marked National Tree Week and joined the Woodland Trust’s Big Climate Fightback.

Ottery coffee shop Tickety-Boo has pledged to raise more funds for its chosen charity Exeter Leukaemia Fund with a special ‘mince pie week’.

From Tuesday 17 to Saturday 21 December, the coffee shop team will donate the price of a mince pie to ELF for each one bought by a customer. That’s £1.50 per mince pie!

Tickety-Boo chef Trystan Bridgman says “All our mince pies are made in the traditional way by our talented baker Lesley.
