It’s no secret that the hospitality sector is facing something of a recruitment crisis.

A combination of Brexit and the pandemic have led to a dearth of staff who are prepared to work unsociable hours for, very often, little more than the minimum wage.

That has become evident at some establishments in my own experience with service levels deteriorating and kitchens, on occasions, having to close.

So, with that in mind I’m glad to say, Exeter’s The Ivy is very much bucking the trend.

Devon County Show mounts drive to attract more farmers

Devon County Show is going back to its roots in 2023, with initiatives planned to encourage greater attendance from the farming community.

First up is a new, concentrated farming area. This will be devoted to agricultural trade stands, where farmers can find everything, they need to manage their farms in one dedicated area. The section will also have its own brand new bar, the Ivington Tavern, where farmers can socialise and ‘chew the cud’ with their peers over a pint.

New bus services launched with improvement plan funding

A new bus service has been launched and another has had its route extended to connect more local communities in Devon. Thanks to funding awarded to Devon County Council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan by the Department for Transport, the new X30 service has been launched from Seaton to Exeter, and the 85 from Tavistock to Barnstaple has undergone enhancements. People across the region are being asked to give their views on a regional strategy that will help ensure that Devon, Cornwall, and the Isles of Scilly can make the changes needed to cope with the worst effects of climate change.

Exeter and Devon Crematorium donate £10,000 to local bereavement charity by recycling metal

Balloons, a local bereavement charity that supports children and young people have received a £10,000 donation from an unusual source.

The Crematorium and Memorial Group (CMG), operators of Exeter and Devon Crematorium and part of Dignity plc , was able to make the donation to Balloons due to the crematorium participating in a nationwide metal recycling scheme, administered by the Association of Private Crematoria & Cemeteries.
