Next year, Exeter will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of being twinned with Bad Homburg in Germany.

The town of Bad Homburg lies at the foot of the Taunus mountains, about a 15 minute drive north-west of Frankfurt. It is a beautiful spa town with a castle and splendid woodland surroundings.

Recent atrocities in Syria and other Middle Eastern countries were the catalyst for a retired professor to finally chart her own childhood in war-torn Germany.

Grim reminder of WWI at RAMM

Scrutiny of objects collected at Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) during the First World War period has revealed a grim reminder of one the horrors of the First World War: the gas attacks which caused over a million casualties.

In 1919 RAMM was given a collection of German military equipment gathered by the British War Trophies Commission after the Armistice. Among the items is a gas mask worn by a German soldier in the trenches.

Artists from Devon have been invited to exhibit their works in Essen, once a centre of the German mining and steel industry.

They will be presenting paintings of the beautiful landscapes of Devon and Cornwall. The German people are particularly interested in this part of the United Kingdom since more than a hundred of Rosamunde Pilcher's novels have been adapted for television by a high ranking German TV station, earning the German producer and Rosamunde Pilcher the British Tourism Award in 2002.
