Exmouth's Queens Drive Space gets £20k revamp

A big tidy up of Exmouth’s Queens Drive space, costing more than £20,000, has been completed with the area now reopen to the public.

Tourists and local residents alike will be able to sip drinks and eat delicious food, provided by local traders, throughout the day and evening in the newly revamped area.

Contractors, appointed by East Devon District Council's (EDDC) property team, have now removed some of the existing seating, both permanently installed and old wooden picnic benches, and replaced them with 24 new picnic benches made from recycled materials.

Western Power Distribution (WPD) is pledging to support its most vulnerable customers in Devon with grants from its Community Matters Fund ahead of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week. Pensioners and their loved ones in the South West are being urged to take-up Pension Credit, as the Government launches a new campaign today that will help those of pension age with the cost of living.

New figures show around 117,800 pensioners in the South West currently receive Pension Credit. However, many are still not claiming this extra financial help, which can offer a vital financial boost worth over £3,300 a year.

Grants of up to £500 available for Devon community wildlife projects

Independent charity Devon Communities Together (DCT) has announced the launch of a new Community Wildlife Grant scheme, which has been developed by the Devon Local Nature Partnership (DLNP) to provide small grants of up to £500 to community wildlife projects.

Applications are open to parish and town councils, community groups and community partnerships that wish to fund initiatives that will benefit local wildlife. This includes funding a new idea, continuing an existing project or starting a new group.

Health officials are warning that cases of COVID-19 – and other diseases that normally circulate in winter – are rising.

Increased social contact is thought to be one of the factors behind an increase in illnesses, which include flu and norovirus, sometimes known as the “winter vomiting bug”.

Although most of England’s Covid-19 restrictions have ended, the health and care system in Devon remains busy, with continued high numbers of people in hospital with COVID-19 and staff absent due to the virus.
