One Million Lives Saved from Cancer since the 1980s

Around 1.2 million deaths have been avoided in the UK since the mid-1980s due to advances in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment, according to new data from Cancer Research UK.

Over the last four decades, UK cancer mortality rates have fallen by around a quarter after peaking in 1985 for men and 1989 for women.

Had rates stayed the same, it is estimated that around 111,000 more lives would have been lost in the South West.

The figures have been released to coincide with the launch of the charity’s new campaign ‘Together We Are Beating Cancer’.

AN AWARD scheme recognising the courage of children and young people diagnosed with cancer is being launched today in the South West.

Around 120 children are diagnosed with cancer in the South West every year. Nominations for the Cancer Research UK for Children & Young People Star Awards, in partnership with TK Maxx, are now open and families across the South West are being called on to nominate young cancer patients and survivors in the run up to Christmas.

PEOPLE across Exeter are being urged to enter Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life as there are just weeks left until the big weekend.

The charity’s much-loved events are returning to the city but with socially distanced measures to keep participants safe. Money raised will help scientists find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, saving lives as the charity fights back from the impact of the pandemic.

PEOPLE in the South West are being urged to get on their bikes for Cancer Research UK and raise money for a wheelie great cause.

People of all ages and abilities – from seasoned cyclists to recent converts – are being encouraged to sign up now for the Cycle 300 challenge to help the charity continue its life-saving mission.

People in Devon will be able to give a big boost to three life-saving charities that have been heavily impacted by COVID-19.

AN INSPIRATIONAL girl from Exeter who has survived cancer was surprised by an off-duty visit from Santa at an extraordinary party to celebrate the courage of children and young people diagnosed with cancer.

Obese people outnumber smokers two to one in the South West

NEW figures from Cancer Research UK show that people who are obese now outnumber smokers two to one in the South West, as the charity urges Government action to tackle obesity.

While smoking is still the nation’s biggest preventable cause of cancer and carries a much higher risk of the disease than obesity, Cancer Research UK’s analysis also reveals that being overweight or obese trumps smoking as the leading cause of four types of cancer – bowel, kidney, ovarian and liver.

In the South West, three in ten adults are obese.
