Chris Sunderland, Director of the Bristol Pound project, will be explaining the value of a local currency for local businesses at a public meeting in St Stephen’s Church in Exeter High Street, Thursday evening 26 September (6.45pm arrival for 7pm start).

The Bristol Pound project was launched last year as a paper currency with internet banking facilities. Supported by Bristol City Council and the Mayor George Ferguson, it helps people support their local firms and shops and keeps purchasing power in the local economy. Users can also make mobile phone payments in Bristol Pounds.

Speaking to members of Exeter City Council and business representatives this month, Chris pointed out that a local currency is not neutral. It supports community, locality, enterprise and an earth-friendly economy: “money with value” Chris says. People exchange sterling for Bristol pounds one for one, because it helps them find suppliers, retailers, entertainments and restaurants which hold these values. The Bristol Pound online directory and the sign on shop windows draws customers to these businesses and provides them with publicity.

Bristol City Council is an active partner in the project, accepting the payment of business rates in Bristol Pounds. The scheme is organized through the Bristol Credit Union.

Chris Sunderland is an impressive advocate. He started his working life as a scientist, became a vicar, and then to take action on things which matter to him, became a social entrepreneur. He is currently working with a number of enterprises helping to make the transition to a low energy and resilient future, including Sims Hill Shared Harvest and The Walled Garden Project in Barton Hill.

Thursday’s meeting will consider whether there is a role for a local currency in the Exeter area. Exeter City Council has already supported initiatives on behalf of independent local businesses, such as the Exeter Trails project launched this summer, www.exetertrails.co.uk . Transition Exeter will host the meeting and provide hot drinks and cake.
