Exeter Phoenix and Exeter's Campus Cinema are very excited to bring two of the most iconic silent films of all time to Exeter, complete with live musical accompaniment from internationally renowned musician Stephen Horne. The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (exeter Phoenix, Mon 19 Nov) is said to be one of the most influential of German Expressionist films and is often considered one of the greatest horror movies of the silent era. The film used stylized sets, with abstract, jagged buildings painted on canvas backdrops and flats. To add to this strange style, the actors used an unrealistic technique that exhibited jerky and dancelike movements. This movie is cited as having introduced the concept of a twist to the end of a film, in cinema. Nosferatu (Nothcott, Tue 20 Nov) is an early adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, features stunning visuals complete with a chilling performance from Max Schreck as Count Orlok. the film depicts Thomas Hutter's (Gustav von Wangenheim) journey to meet the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck), who is intent on purchasing property in the city of Wisborg. However, Hutter soon discovers a dark secret the Count has concealed… Nosferatu brings the invention and aesthetics of German Expressionism to Stoker's classic character, creating the first memorable depiction of a vampire in cinematic history and a significant entry into the annals of the horror film. The screenings have been kindly supported by the Bill Douglas Centre in Exeter. Tickets are available from Exeter Phoenix box office, 01392 667080 or Exeter Northcott, 01392 493493.
