Barclays Bank: Tea and Teach
Research by Barclays has found that with over 5.1 million people over 65 in the UK who have never been online, if all of them were to hit the net, it would result in a collective saving of £3.78 billion a year. In the South West only 44% of 418,000 over 65s have access to the internet meaning money savings could be made.
To support those wishing to gain access to potential money savings online, on Tuesday 18th March 2014, Barclays Exeter branch in Bedford Street, will be hosting its first a ‘tea and teach’ morning for individuals whatever their age, to become more savvy with everyday technology such as IPads, smart phones and other tablets. A team of local Barclays Digital Eagle will be on hand and consumers are encouraged to pop in and bring along their own devices and get online using the free Wi-Fi available in the branch.
The Barclays research also found that those who are online spend less on an annual basis. An older internet user typically saves over £61 a month on household bills thanks to shopping comparison sites, lower travel costs and buying for less online – a saving of £742 a year. Given that the average pensioner income is just £18,000, internet access can make a substantial contribution to the household budget for the older generation.
Richard Union, Digital Eagle at Barclays, Exeter, said: “The Digital Eagles programme is all about going above and beyond to help our customers get the most out of being online. We’ve listened to our customers and understand the challenges they face and this is the latest step in our commitment to making their lives easier by getting to grips with technology. We want everyone, regardless of age, to reap some of the benefits of being online, whether that’s saving money, keeping on top of finances or staying in touch with family and friends.”
The Digital Eagles programme is supported by over 3,500 employees based in Barclays branches across the UK, helping beginner internet users with tasks such as online banking, shopping, using Skype or staying in contact with family and friends with Facebook. The Digital Eagles also help other novice users understand how the latest apps can make their lives easier.
