For a Sunday with a difference - head over to watch the Devon Sabre Championships! Fencers from across the county are heading to Newton Abbot Leisure Centre to decide who takes the Men's and Women's titles of 2015 Devon Sabre Champion.

Sabre is fast, fun and dynamic... yet fencers can outwit an opponent with very subtle footwork and swordplay. You can score a hit with any part of the blade - the target is the whole upper body above the hips, including the head and arms. Fencers come on guard wearing steel masks and lamé jackets on top of protective clothing, linked up to electronic score boxes that light up to show who makes a hit.

Competitors pledge their honour to fence well, fairly and safely - every bout ends with a salute and handshake.

If you would like to learn Sabre, just ask the organisers who will gladly take your details so you can try fencing at your local club.
