On Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September, from 11am to 5pm, Castle Drogo will be holding an Edwardian country fair.

There will lots of fun for all the family including traditional games such as coconut shy and skittles, the Dartmoor ranger team will be demonstrating time-honoured rural skills such as hurdle making and, of course, no fair would be complete without swing boats and a Punch and Judy show.

On Saturday, there will be performances from the Great Western Morris dancers and music from Hatherleigh silver band. On Sunday there will be more local entertainment with dancing from the Tinner’s Morris team and local musicians the Ramsley Minors. There will also demonstrations of traditional Dartmoor step and broom dancing.

Over the weekend the Castle will also be hosting the Royal British Legion’s ‘We Will Remember’ banner which commemorates the centenary of the First World War. Visitors will invited to donate a silk poppy in memory of someone who served in the War and the banner will be supported by an exhibition of memorabilia including horse shoes from the Somme, trench art and recipes.

This will also be one of the last opportunities to see the current displays within the Castle. In November, staff and volunteers will be prepared for the next phase of the current building project to save the Castle by making it watertight. The viewing tower will be open over the weekend, to give visitors the chance to see first-hand the conservation work taking place on the roof (weather depending, restrictions apply).
