Focus FACT meet up: Discussion of George Marshall's book
About Us
FACT is a reading group that meets monthly to discuss contemporary literature on various topics including: politics, social theory, climate change, economics, and other nonfiction. The purpose of this group is to promote fact-based information relating to current affairs in an informal setting. We meet once a month in The Bike Shed Theatre bar to discuss what the group is reading, and members are welcome to bring along anything they are reading or just come to join the conversation.
Why this group? I have a list of books that I have personally found useful, and am happy to add recommendations to the list - check the Files section. I look forward to receiving any recommendations from group members, and I hope to see you at our meetings! Dave
About This Event
Our first book discussion will be on George Marshall's Don't Even Think About It: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Ignore Climate Cchange
I will present a 5-10 summary of the book at the beginning of the meet up to remind people of the key points and to give anyone who hasn't read the book an idea of the subject.
Prompts for discussion:
1. How did you view climate change before you read the book?
2. What did you think of the group identity argument? For example: socially constructed silence.
3. Who do you trust as a source of information? What makes someone believable or not?
4. Current campaigns: do they work? Greenpeace, Naomi Klein, New Scientist etc.
5. What was your biggest take away from the book?
Come along, grab a drink and get involved! All welcome.
