At the end of the 19th century, a small group of Paris-based artists became rebels. The key figures of this artistic movement were Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Camille Pissaro, Paul Cézanne, Alfred Sisley, and Jean Renoir. They painted landscapes and lively everyday life scenes, expressing the play of light through a bright and varied use of colour. Breaking away from the former academic painting style, this movement marks the birth of modern art. Dispensing with the rules of the past, these artists were chasing the same dream: “capturing the essence of reality”.
