European Airlines at a Crossroads with Prof Keith Hayward FRAeS

After 20 years of liberalisation, Europe is effectively an open and free market for air travel. For European airlines this has been a mixed blessing. It has led to a massive reduction in the cost of flying around Europe, but it has put some long and familiar airlines under considerable pressure. The most powerful force for change has been the emergence of the Low Cost Carrier (LCC) that has created a new thirst for air travel, but whose business model has undercut many of the legacy carriers’ profits. With their long haul business now threatened by aggressive airlines in the Middle and Far East, as well as re-invigorated and rationalised US carriers, the European legacy airlines must look to rethink their business strategies or exit the market.
