Free-range felters – it’s a family affair at A la Ronde
A talented local mother and her two daughters are currently exhibiting an unusual range of paintings, prints and felted items at A la Ronde, near Exmouth. The family of artists – Daphne Currier, Louisa Currier and Josephine Birch – work both together and individually to celebrate the natural environment.
Daphne Currier (BA Art/Ed) works mainly in felt to make pictures, wall hangings, cushions, hats, bags and accessories. Daphne says: ‘My work is embellished with hand and machine stitching and some elements of collage. Felt work is becoming more popular as a versatile and durable medium which is as plastic as clay; and like clay it can be used to create simple craft or fine art objects.’
Louisa Currier (B.Art Central St Martin's College of Art and Design, London) a flourishing portrait artist working mainly in oils, exhibits a number of her paintings. Louisa also makes whimsical hats with a magical theme and other items of felt such as corsages and purses.
Josephine Birch studied fine art at Wimbledon, University of London, and is currently studying illustration at Cambridge School of Art. Josephine has a range of prints and drawings on show featuring the theme of 'figure in a landscape', capturing the character of a place with well observed figures bringing it to life. Her engaging work often depicts the humorous side of human interaction.
The current exhibition lasts until 27 March. A la Ronde is open daily and entry to the exhibition in the stable and tearoom is free.
