An evening of music celebrating the sea
A new work for choir and orchestra inspired by a book of Saxon poetry is to be heard for the first time at Exeter Cathedral on March 12.
‘The Seafarer’ by Andrew Millington will be performed by The Exeter Philharmonic Choir in a special, sea-themed concert. Andrew was Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral from 1999 to 2015 and has been leading the choir since 2003. For the new work, his first for choir and orcestra, Andrew has used lines from the modern English translation of the 'Exeter Book' a Saxon text kept at the Cathedral, along with phrases from the Book of Psalms that mention the sea.
The concert commences with Mendelssohn’s ‘Overture, Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage’ and concludes with a rare opportunity to hear ‘A Sea Symphony’ by Vaughan Williams.
For this performance, the choir welcomes back local soloists Julian Rippon and Catherine Hamilton, and the Sinfonietta, a full symphony orchestra led by Richard Studt.
As well as standard tickets, a special supper club ticket is available which includes two pre-ordered courses at the nearby Royal Clarence Hotel. This includes an escort to the Cathedral and the best seats available. This unmissable concert starts at the Cathedral at 7.30pm. Tickets are available in advance from the Exeter Visitor Information box office or by calling 01392 665885. They can also be purchased on the door on the night.
