The George Hotel, South Molton welcomes award winning folk duo Tom McConville and Leonard Brown when then play on Saturday 29 March.

Tom could be said to be a musician’s musician and Seth Lakeman himself has referred to him as "One of the greatest violinists I've ever heard and by far the biggest influence in my music - A true master".  What’s good enough for Seth is certainly good enough for The George!

Tom is certainly one of the leading fiddle players of our time. A virtuoso musician and fantastic singer, his rich and warm voice makes his interpretation of traditional and contemporary songs greatly admired throughout the world.

Born on Tyneside, brought up in a pub on the famous Scotswood Road with clientele drawn from the Irish and Scottish communities, Tom first experienced traditional singing and fiddle music. The Hornpipes of James Hill amongst his first influences.

Tom’s musical journey started in Tyneside folk clubs in the late 60s and early 70s. Newcastle’s thriving Irish scene provided the opportunity to support Sean McGuire, John Doonan, The Fureys, Boys of the Lough and even a lock-in with The Dubliners. Tom still credits the legendary Sean McGuire, the fiddle genius from Belfast, for teaching him his bowing techniques.

In great demand as a performer, session musician and teacher, playing the fiddle is Tom’s lifelong passion and he has achieved every player’s dream of creating his own unique, instantly recognizable sound.

His live performances combine a rollercoaster of musical delights from fast, rhythmic dance tunes, through beautiful slow airs and of course, great singing. All presented with his inimitable sense of humour and style.
Tom won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Musician of The Year in 2009.

The other half of the Tom McConville duo is Leonard Brown, who lives in South Shields, is the Current All Scotland Accordion Champion, one of only two Englishmen to win this coveted title. He also plays piano as well as piano accordion, passed his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music at Newcastle University in 2012. Since then, he has started to establish himself as a full time professional musician.
