Sean Hughes - Penguins
If you watched any TV at all during the Nineties, then there is a better than average chance you will recognise Irish comic Sean Hughes. The youngest ever winner of the Perrier Comedy Award, Sean appeared in his own Channel 4 show (appropriately enough entitled “Sean’s Show”), cropped up in Alan Parker’s acclaimed film The Commitments and became a regular panellist on BBC2 comedy music quiz Never Mind The Buzzcocks. He has even been voted No. 40 in a “World’s 100 Greatest Comedians” poll commissioned by Channel 4 and is an accomplished playwright as well as an actor and (obviously) a comedian.
Now RBM present Penguins, Sean’s latest acclaimed show which won the Herald Angels Award for Best Comedy Show at The Edinburgh Fringe. Taking a reflective look back at his Dublin childhood, the subsequent years of teenaged awkwardness, his early love of music (such as The Human League) and the nature of friendship and er, penguins, this promises to be a sensitive, tender, intelligent and multi-layered show which should prove as thought provoking as it is funny.
