This June, Plymouth-based theatre company New Model Theatre bring their new show Static to the Bike Shed Theatre, Exeter as part of the Ignite Festival. The Exeter dates will be the first stop on their tour of four of the UK’s biggest fringe theatre festivals.

"I've seen everything that's wrong with the world beamed through radio waves, microwaves and via satellite. No, when I die, there will be a screen. And on that screen will flash the collective consciousness of seven billion people. Just as it has every day of my life."

Static combines brilliant storytelling with verbatim news reports to tell a coming of age story that spans a decade. From watching the World Trade Centre fall live on TV to the top of Tory HQ, through drunken teenage parties and walking home with broken noses.

This is the story of how a generation grew up with the world at their fingertips, how they learnt to switch off their screens, and got up on their feet.

Following a young man growing up through the early 21st century, Static asks how we go about engaging with the world in an age of mass information. Written partly in response to the student demonstrations of recent years, it asks what it takes for a generation so comfortable interacting from behind a screen to open their doors and get out on the streets.

Writer, Tom Nicholas says: "I became very interested in how having constant news coverage and instant access to vast amounts of information effects the process of growing up. The issue of how we engage with an increasingly impersonal world will, I believe, come to define our generation."

The play has been developed by New Model Theatre with the support of the Barbican Theatre, Plymouth. Plymouth-based New Model Theatre look beyond form to create modern theatre for a modern audience. The company was formed in 2012 by Tom Nicholas, writer and director of Static, who has recently written for Paines Plough and Drum Theatre Plymouth.

Exeter Ignite Fringe Festival - Bike Shed Theatre, Exeter, 3 June at 5.50pm, 4 June at 3.40pm and 5 June at 7.50pm, tickets £6.
