A recent survey by David Wilson Homes found that 46% of Brits feel stressed when putting up their Christmas decorations, with 66% admitting they struggle with fairy lights and 19% fretting over colour schemes.

To help make the festive season more enjoyable, the housebuilders, with developments across Devon, have partnered with Rachel Bent, Head of Visual Merchandising and Christmas at Bents Garden & Home, renowned for its stunning Christmas displays, and interior designer Alix Riding of Show Business Interiors, to share expert tips for creating a beautifully decorated, stress-free home this Christmas.

Make decorating enjoyable

Rachel said: “Christmas is a magical time for family and friends to come together, but preparations can sometimes feel daunting, especially if you’re hosting. December 1 is the most popular day to put up a Christmas tree, so now’s the perfect time to start planning your festive décor. Preparing early means you can avoid last-minute shopping trips and instead enjoy the creative process.”

Focus on key spaces

She advises: “Prioritise key rooms. Instead of decorating every room, focus on the areas where your family spends the most time, such as the living and dining rooms. A festive touch in a guest room or a cosy addition to the smallest space, like the downstairs powder room, with spiced scents and fairy lights, can also be delightful.

Also, pace yourself – if you’re dreading the time-consuming task of de-tangling your fairy lights, don’t force yourself to decorate your home all in one day, as you’ll feel de-motivated. Take a staggered approach – tackle the tree one day, wreaths and garlands another. Involve your family, especially children and turn it into a fun activity to create cherished memories.”

Plan ahead for a smooth experience

Alix recommends: “Before you start, ensure artificial trees are in good condition and decorations are clean. Test your fairy lights and check you have everything you need, including plenty of wire for hanging ornaments.

Also, make sure you give yourself enough time. Tree decorating is an art, so don’t rush it. Set aside plenty of time, put on some tunes or a favourite Christmas movie in the background, pour a glass of something festive, and get into the spirit. For a quicker option, consider pre-lit trees that save time while still looking fabulous.”

Create a Christmas tree that wows

With over 30 years of tree-decorating expertise, Rachel Bent shares her top five tips for a stunning tree:

• Make it sparkle: Check all bulbs are working and weave the lights evenly through the branches to create a magical glow.

• Create a diagonal flow: Arrange ribbons, flowers, or woodland foliage diagonally around the tree, creating natural sections to place ornaments.

• Cluster your baubles: Use gold or silver wire to group baubles in clusters of three. This adds visual impact and keeps decorations secure – perfect if you have children or pets.

• Make it personal: Incorporate family heirlooms, handmade ornaments, or special gifts for a tree that tells your family’s unique story.

• Add a tree skirt: Hide the tree’s base with a stylish tree skirt, which comes in a variety of materials and colours to elevate your décor.

With a little planning and creativity, decorating your home can become a stress-free and joyful way to welcome the festive season.
