Exeter shoppers urged to Race for Life
Local artists from Exeter teamed up with Race for Life's Battle HQ this weekend to capture the attention of the ladies of Exeter, and encourage them to sign up for Cancer Research UK's Race for Life.
The artists are urging mums, daughters, sisters and friends to choose a Race for Life 5k, 10k or Pretty Muddy event and make it their mission to take part at Westpoint Exeter on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th July.
Capturing the power and passion of Race for Life, local performers Kathy Giddens, Kara-Jade Gelder, Maddie Whittaker and Arbor donned the stage in Princesshay Square dressed in signature hot pink t-shirts with the words 'Cancer we're coming to get you!'.
The host of acts captured the crowds with a medley of acoustic and ukulele music engulfing Princesshay in festival-style atmosphere. The attention of shoppers however, was truly caught by two inspirational young girls who bravely stepped up to the stage to perform their rendition of 'Eye of the Tiger'.
Alongside the stage, volunteers and event managers gave away hot pink lipsticks and dogtags, encouraging shoppers to get geared up and become part of Race for Life's Pink Army.
Katie Dolan, organiser of the Race for Life launch event, said: “We’re so excited to team up with local Exeter talent to entertain shoppers and give ladies a snippet of the fun and excitement which makes our Race for Life events so unique.
“We want this year’s Race for Life to be our biggest and best yet, and hope the performances this weekend inspired local women of all shapes and sizes to sign up and join the charge. It’s time to form a pink platoon of feisty, go-getting girls and show cancer who’s boss.”
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco for the past 15 years, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, and pretty muddy events which raises millions of pounds every year to help beat 200 different types of cancer.
Last year, 4906 women took part in Race for Life in Exeter and raised a fantastic £262,835. This year, organisers need local women and girls to stride out to help raise even more for life-saving research.
Katie continued: “Every day, 91 people are diagnosed with cancer in the South West*. That’s why we are calling on the brave ladies of Devon to help make this year’s Race for Life our best ever.
“It doesn’t matter how fit or fast you are because Race for Life is not competitive. It’s about an army of fun-loving and fearless women standing shoulder-to-shoulder, ready to take on cancer and raise essential money for life-saving research.”
Cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. Thanks to advances in research, more people in the South West are surviving cancer than ever before. But to help even more people survive, Cancer Research UK needs everyone in the South West to act right now.
Katie added: “Race for Life is a unique, moving and inspirational event and we’re calling on local women to join the fight and meet us at the starting line. With fire in their bellies and trainers at the ready, we know that the brave ladies of Exeter are ready take on the challenge and help beat cancer sooner.”
