Free Sunday parking in Newton Abbot
Teignbridge District Council is opening Newton Abbot’s multi-storey car park to provide extra free Sunday car parking in the festive run-up to Christmas.
The 296-space long stay car park will open on Sundays of December 6, December 13 and December 20 and won’t cost a penny to park in.
The move was introduced in response to a request from traders and is aimed at giving shoppers more choice to park for free as well as supporting shops and businesses during the busy Christmas shopping season.
Cllr Doug Hellier-Laing, Teignbridge District Council’s executive member for economy, skills and tourism, said:
“We’re conscious that Newton Abbot is at the heart of lots of infrastructure work and as we run up to Christmas we are keen to support our traders as they embark on one of their busiest times of the year, but also give people more choice about where they park.
“The multi-storey car park doesn’t normally open on Sundays but we see this as an opportunity to provide extra space and choice, something we hope will encourage more people to visit and do some of their Christmas shopping here.”
David Austin, owner of Austins department store in Newton Abbot, said:
"This is really good news for Newton Abbot, and I am sure that this response by Teignbridge will be seen as a very positive step for the town. Additional free parking on Sundays before Christmas will offer convenience to shoppers at a time of year that is crucial for traders and will help to enhance Newton Abbot's position as a thriving shopping centre.”
Sally Henley, Newton Abbot’s Town Development Manager, said:
“I know that businesses will be delighted at this news. Sunday is an increasingly busy trading day and having the multi storey car park open on the run up to Christmas will be a great bonus for shoppers. There are all sorts of reasons to choose Newton Abbot and free parking on Sundays is just one more great incentive to support local business when it comes to Christmas shopping."
On Sundays, all Teignbridge-owned car parks are free in a scheme that has been running since 2011. Charges are dropped in all urban and rural parts of the district with the exception of Teignmouth, Shaldon, Dawlish and Dawlish Warren through the busy summer months.
During the winter months, the seaside resorts rejoin the offering meaning all Teignbridge-owned car parks are now free on Sundays until the end of March 2016.
Free Sunday car parking applies to Teignbridge District Council-owned car parks and also to the Newton Abbot Asda car park. Areas of on-street pay and display, which is controlled by Devon County Council, are also free in Newton Abbot every Sunday.
